(Historical) National Accounts
The data hub on (Historical) National Accounts will enable researchers to analyse international differences in productivity and living standards from a long-term perspective.
The overall objective is to upgrade a dataset of standardised series of historical national accounts for the period 1870-present, with basic underlying series on income and productivity for important branches of the economy. One of the main aims is to link the historical data to the project co-ordinated by Prof. Bart van Ark and to extent and upgrade the work of Prof. Maddison. The upgrading focuses on the disaggregation of national income data at a sector level as well as on enhancing the comparability of the estimates, which are already available for several countries. The data, and a thorough description of sources and methodology, will be put on the website of the Groningen Growth and Development Centre. In the first phase of this project, historical national accounts data which are already available will be assembled. Not only will these data be made available, also will be investigated which data are missing and how these gaps can be filled. Special attention will be paid to methodological aspects of the ways in which historical national accounts have been constructed in different countries and to what extent these estimates are consistent and comparable in time and space.
