Short biography

Bas van Leeuwen (Post-doc researcher, internal protocols, data standardization, data upgrading) has a considerable research experience with the measurement of human capital and with handling historical datasets for different periods (thirteenth to twentieth century) and different regions (ranging from England to the Far East). He has a thorough knowledge of theories concerning human capital formation and economic growth. He constructed average years of education and human capital stock series for India, Indonesia and Japan for the period 1890-2001 in his dissertation. Through this doctoral project he gained experience in reconstructing series from scattered, sometimes incomplete data sources. He has articles, co-authored with Péter Földvári, published, or accepted for publication, in peer-reviewed journals. These include an estimation of the human capital stock from household surveys for Eastern and Central Europe, and the application of the variable ‘average years of education’ in empirical studies to verify or falsify growth theories.
