Biological Standard of Living

This hub aims at providing national and individual data on historical welfare development for research and education. This material serves as a powerful tool for all researchers interested in the analysis of long-term development of European and other countries. Historical data on economic and social phenomena are not only of value for historians, but will also prove to be an important input in the research of economists, sociologists and scholars working in the field of political sciences. Central are anthropometric indicators – measured via height, body mass index and similar variables, including those based on archaeological sources. Relationships which so far are undisclosed can be explored. These are, among others, the implications of height research for labour productivity, demography, health systems, and Least Developed Countries. Consequently, it is evident that this data collection is extremely useful for a broad spectre of research activities. The policy implications deriving from such research will be important and far-reaching.

The data hub collects and standardizes data on heights and other indicators of standard of living. The most important goal of this particular data hub is the upgrading of an integrated European-wide data base on a wide range of those indicators. This project seeks to fill the many voids still present in this field of research. Its aim is to prepare the data in a way which facilitates the best possible use in the world of science. Apart from bringing together existing data in one comprehensive framework, and adding new samples to the database, the hub will also serve as a forum for further discussion.
