Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure

This research group was set up in 1964 by Peter Laslett and E.A. Wrigley in the Faculty of History. For forty years it has been at the cutting edge of social science history. In that time the Group has achieved global recognition for its pioneering achievements in quantitative history, especially in the fields of historical demography and family history where it has long been the world’s leading research centre. Today the Group is based in the Department of Geography and the Faculty of History and is directed by Professor Richard Smith with collaborative links to, among others, the Economics departments of Cambridge and Yale Universities. Historical demography continues to be central to the research interests of the Group with approximately half of its research income directed to projects on demographic and family history in China, England, Germany, Poland, Scotland, Spain, Tanzania and Wales. However, in recent years the largest single program of research within the Group has been the project The Occupational Structure of Britain 1379-1911 directed by Dr. Leigh Shaw-Taylor and Professor E.A. Wrigley. Other research projects at the Group include: work on measuring the productivity of English medieval agriculture; research on the nature of English medieval legal institutions and several projects on early modern welfare systems. The Group has received £4.3m of research funding in the last five years and is an unparalleled environment for running large-scale quantitative historical research projects with a long-standing track record of producing exceptionally high quality data for the study of major historical problems.
