Central Portal
In the central hub the distributed local data hubs are integrated. The central hub will be designed by DANS, in cooperation with the other partners in the project, in particular IISH (who will host the portal) and VKS (who will be in charge of the visualization).
The central hub:
1. Harvests the data in the distributed hubs.
2. Harmonizes the data in such a way that they receive a uniform structure and format, to be compatible with common software (e.g. statistical packages) used for data analysis and in compliance with the Gapminder and StatPlanet visualization tools.
3. Enriches the data with appropriate geographical (country) and occupational codes.
4. Provides a tool for selection, aggregation and combination of variables according to space (geographic unit, at least on the country level), subject (depending on the contents and semantic enrichment of the hubs), and time (year). Through this tool users are able to construct and download datasets.
5. Stores the data and makes them available for further presentation in the Gapminder tool and the Statplanet tool.
6. Stores the data for long-term archiving in the DANS Electronic Archiving System EASY (along with the input data as harvested from the distributed hubs) in an archival format and with persistent identifiers. Archiving in other trusted digital archives, complying with the requirements of the international Data Seal of Approval is optional.
7. Provides a shell (gateway or portal) for presentation and visualisation of Gapminder and Statplanet.
8. Defines, specifies and implements a service to facilitate journals with a DAP policy by creating links of CLIO-INFRA datasets to relevant journal articles, thus creating “enriched publications” or “enriched datasets”.
