Demographic Database

Umeå University has a strong international and multicultural presence. The university has approximately 29,000 students and over 4,100 employees and is the host of the Demographic Database (DDB). Since 1973, the DDB computerises historical social and demographic sources and makes them available for national and international research. Today, DDB is recognised by the Swedish Government as a ‘national resource’, and is considered a key facility for historical and social demographic research in Sweden. DDB is also pointed out as world leading in digitisation and processing of historical population data and making them accessible for research and education. DDB offers the largest historical demographic database in Europe and one of the largest in the world. DDB is also active in different international efforts to coordinate methodology, database access interfaces and to develop international standards for classification and coding systems.
