HISCO web of work
Work is the engine of economic growth and the backbone of the social structure in all European member states. Central to work are occupations. They form the basis of reward systems and systems of social services. Work is a central topic in the scientific community as well. Occupations, and its correlates of class and status are widely studied. Yet they are difficult to make comparable. Each country, epoch and language has different occupational titles. The History of Work Information System (http://historyofwork.iisg.nl) has been formed bottom up by scholars from the member states, and beyond.
The History of Work Information System contains occupational titles of both men and women from various countries, languages and time periods and standardized occupational codes. It has a coding module for researchers to code their data. It contains images on the world of work of men, women and children in the European past. It serves as a portal to relevant literature, websites and research communities. The History of Work Information System is structured around the Historical International Standard Classification of Occupations (HISCO). This is a historicized version of system with proven comparative credentials in all member states of the European Union, and beyond: the International Labour Organisation’s International Standard Classification of Occupations, or ISCO.
Within the CLIO-INFRA project, semantic web technologies will be explored in order to make HISCO more flexible and interactive.
Specific objectives are:
- To develop a web of work information model.
- To implement a sizeable prototype of the historical web of work with state-of-the-art semantic web tools.
- To assess new opportunities of the historical web of work in relation to HISCO.
