Human Capital Formation

During the last decades human capital has become a focal point of research, especially with the rise of endogenous growth theories. Not only is it a main candidate for explaining income differences among countries but it is often considered as the engine of long-run economic growth. The concept of human capital has found its way into other social sciences as well. It has been studied in the context of institutions, its relationship with corruption and efficiency, and the impact of inequality of human capital on welfare. However, it still is an under-researched factor explaining economic growth, linking social and demographic change to economic development.

There are several individual researchers and smaller research groups collecting and reconstructing national data on human capital. The hub on human capital seeks to promote cooperation among researchers active in this field and collect the relevant information at one place. A major objective of the hub is, besides upgrading data construction and collection, to promote methodological standardization.
